Chapter 12

KATY HAD AN INTERVIEW the following morning. She hoped something worked out. As much as she loved her parents, them coming in and trying to change everything was a little overwhelming. She appreciated the help, but could do without the criticism of her choices.

Polly showed up promptly at ten o’clock. She wore a red headband, a smile, and sensible shoes. Katy liked her already.

By the end of the interview, she was certain Polly would work out. At least for the time being. “When can you start?”

“I got the job?”

“If you want it, it’s yours.”

Polly clapped her hands together. “Thank you so much. I’m trying to save up more money for school. Tutoring helped for a while, but the center I worked for recently changed hands. They let all of us go and brought their own people in.”

“Their loss,” Katy said. “I’d be happy to have you here.”

“Thank you so much.”

“Can you be here at eight tomorrow?” Katy asked.

“Absolutely,” she said. “In fact, I’ll be ten minutes early!”

“Fabulous.” Katy couldn’t stop smiling. She had a good feeling about this girl. She seemed sweet, willing to work, and didn’t have a list of requirements for her schedule.

After Polly left, Katy told the news to her parents. “It looks like I’ve found a replacement for Jessi. One more day, and I should be good to go.”

“Oh, so now you don’t need us anymore?” Doris asked.

“Of course, I need you, but not here. Besides, I’ve asked too much of you already.”

“I’ve kind of liked working here with you,” she said.

Katy sighed. There was no winning.

Rocco nudged his daughter. “Ask her to stay.”

Don’t do it. Don’t do it. Don’t do it. “Mom, do you want to hang out here time to time, maybe work a couple of shifts?”

“Yes! This will be so much fun, working side by side. And I’ll show you how to fix your coleslaw, too!”

Katy groaned.
